Recent advances in spatial data collection (in terms of volume, content, accuracy and speed) have led to utilizing more efficient methods for managing and deploying of such data. On the other hand, huge amount of available spatial data has provided new applications, which in result severely increased the range of their users. For instance, several devices used by people in everyday life (like mobile phones) are now equipped with maps and georeferenced spatial data. Therefore, it is inevitable to develop new methods for storage, retrieve, analysis and representation of spatial data.

Geospatial Information System (GIS) Engineering is one of the divisions of Surveying Engineering in Master and PhD programs, which deals with collection, storage, retrieve, management and processing of georeferenced spatial data and their attributes in order to provide useful information for decision making. It is in tide relation with other divisions of Surveying Engineering (including Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry, Geodesy and Hydrography), which mainly deal with spatial data production.

GIS Engineering deploys a wide range of science and techniques (such as computer software and hardware, computer science, spatial information science and information technology) to provide a ground to deal with spatial data for different levels of users.

The program duration takes minimum of 4 semesters and the maximum duration is determined by the laws of the Iran's Science, Research and Technology ministry.
